Why Pinterest works for Etsy shops
People do not browse Pinterest the way they browse a feed. They search for "personalized dog mom gift" or "minimalist gold hoop earrings" and save what they find for later. That is the same intent as an Etsy search, with one difference: on Pinterest you can reach the buyer before they have opened Etsy at all.
Pins also last. A product pin that earns saves keeps appearing in search for months, long after an Etsy listing has been pushed down by newer ones. For a small shop, a few dozen well-written pins can become a steady source of visitors you did not pay for.
This guide assumes you know the basics of how Pinterest search works. If not, read the Pinterest SEO guide first.
Two kinds of pins for every listing
Product pins are clean shots on a plain background, the kind you use as a listing's main photo. They work for searches with a clear product in mind: "ceramic ring dish", "linen apron".
Lifestyle pins show the item in use: the apron on someone cooking, the ring dish on a nightstand. They work for searches about a mood or a situation: "cozy kitchen aesthetic", "bedside table styling". They also get saved more, because people save ideas, not catalogs.
Make both for each listing. They target different searches and they give Pinterest two chances to match the listing to a buyer.
Keywords: Etsy phrasing versus Pinterest phrasing
Your Etsy tags are a good starting list, but check how each one reads on Pinterest. Type the tag into the Pinterest search bar and look at the suggestions that drop down, then at the colored tiles under the results. Those are the phrases real people use.
| Etsy tag style | Pinterest search style |
|---|---|
| boho wall hanging macrame | macrame wall hanging boho bedroom |
| gift for her birthday | birthday gift ideas for her |
| custom pet portrait | custom pet portrait painting from photo |
| wedding earrings pearl | pearl bridal earrings for wedding |
Pinterest phrasing tends to add the room, the occasion or the person. Pick one main phrase per pin and two supporting ones, then write them into normal sentences.
Titles and descriptions that sell
A product pin title has 100 characters. Use them for product, style and use, in that order when it reads naturally: "Linen Apron with Pockets, Natural Oatmeal, for Cooking and Pottery". The product phrase should be in the first 40 characters, because that is what shows in most placements.
The description has up to 800 characters. It does not show in the feed, but Pinterest reads it and buyers see it when they open the pin. Cover what a buyer wants to know before clicking: material, size, color options, who it suits, and the occasion. Keyword in the first sentence, related phrases after.
Alt text is for what is in the picture: "Oatmeal linen apron with two front pockets, hanging on a wooden hook in a kitchen."
The description generator below has an Etsy preset that writes titles and descriptions in this shape from a few words about the listing: /pinterest-description-generator/etsy.
Product rich pins: let the listing do some of the work
Rich pins pull details from the page a pin links to. For product pins that means the price and whether the item is in stock, read from the listing page's tags. Etsy listing pages include these tags, so most sellers get product rich pins without doing anything beyond claiming their account and pinning listing URLs.
To check, paste a listing URL into the validator. It shows exactly what Pinterest reads and flags anything missing.
If you also pin from your own website, make sure its product pages have Open Graph and schema.org product tags with a price and currency.
Boards: by product type and by occasion
Boards give every pin on them a second set of keywords, so name them for what buyers search.
- One board per product category. "Ceramic Mugs", "Linen Aprons", "Macrame Wall Hangings". Save each listing's pins here first.
- One board per occasion or recipient. "Gifts for Gardeners", "Mother's Day Gift Ideas", "Housewarming Gifts". Save pins here a few days after the category board, and only if the item fits.
- A few lifestyle boards. "Cozy Kitchen Ideas", "Minimalist Bedroom Decor". These attract saves from people who are not shopping yet, which still helps the pins rank.
Write a two-sentence description for each board using its keyword and a close variant. Keep boards specific; a board for everything you sell ranks for nothing.
Plan for gift seasons
Pinterest users plan early. Searches for holiday gifts start rising in late summer, and pins need weeks of saves to rank well when the search peaks. A simple calendar:
| Pin by | For |
|---|---|
| January | Valentine's Day, spring weddings |
| March | Mother's Day, graduation |
| June | Back to school, fall weddings |
| September | Halloween, Thanksgiving hosting, Christmas gifts |
| November | Last-minute gifts, New Year |
Make occasion-specific pins for your bestsellers with the occasion in the title: "Personalized Recipe Box, Mother's Day Gift for Mom Who Loves to Cook". Save them to the matching occasion board.
Disclosure and rules
If you ever pin someone else's product with an affiliate link, Pinterest requires a clear disclosure in the pin, and you must not hide the link's destination. For your own listings this does not apply, but it is worth knowing because Etsy sellers often collaborate.
Pinterest also treats near-duplicate pins as spam under its community guidelines. Do not save the same image to ten boards in one day, and do not reuse a description across listings. Make a new image for a new pin.
Mistakes Etsy sellers make
- Pinning only the listing's main photo. It is a product shot with no context. Add a lifestyle pin and a text overlay pin.
- Titles that copy the Etsy title's keyword stack. "Mug Ceramic Mug Handmade Mug Coffee Mug Gift" reads as spam. Write one clear sentence.
- Linking to the shop homepage. Link to the listing.
- No alt text. It is a free extra place for the keyword and it helps buyers who use screen readers.
- Pinning everything in one afternoon. Spread pins across the week; Pinterest favors steady activity.
- Starting holiday pins in December. Start in September.

Frequently asked questions
- Should I link pins to my Etsy listing or to my shop?
- To the listing. Someone who clicks a pin of a specific mug wants that mug, and landing on a shop page with 80 items loses them. Link to the shop only from a profile or board description, not from product pins.
- Can I use the same keywords from my Etsy tags on Pinterest?
- Mostly, with the phrasing adjusted. Etsy tags are short and often stacked for the Etsy algorithm. Pinterest wants natural sentences and the phrase people type into its search bar, which you can check in the Pinterest search suggestions.
- How many pins should I make per listing?
- At least two: a clean product shot and a lifestyle shot showing the item in use. Add more over time for bestsellers, each with a different angle such as the occasion, the recipient, or the material.
- Do product rich pins work with Etsy?
- Etsy listing pages include the product tags Pinterest reads, so pins that link to a listing can show the current price and availability. Check one of your listing URLs with a rich pins validator to confirm what Pinterest sees.
- When should I start pinning for the holidays?
- Two to three months before. Pinterest users plan early, and pins need time to collect saves before the search peaks. Pin gift items in September for December, and spring items in January.
