Why board names matter for search
Pinterest reads a pin's own text first, then the name and description of the board it was saved to. The first board a pin goes on carries the most weight for what Pinterest decides the pin is about. So a board name is not a label for you. It is a keyword attached to every pin on the board.
Three things follow:
- Name boards with phrases people search, in plain words.
- Keep one topic per board, so the keyword is accurate for every pin on it.
- Save each new pin first to the board that matches it best.
The limit is 50 characters. Good names are usually two to four words.
Five naming formulas
| Formula | Example | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Topic + type | Easy Dinner Recipes | The board is a plain category. |
| Audience + topic | Outfits for Petite Women | Your niche is a specific group. |
| Topic + constraint | Small Bathroom Ideas | Most of your content shares a limit: small, budget, beginner. |
| Topic + occasion | Fall Porch Decor | The board is seasonal. |
| Topic + style | Scandinavian Living Rooms | Style is how people search in your niche. |
Avoid board names that only make sense to you (Inspo, Faves, Someday), names that are a single broad word (Food, Home), and names with more than one topic (Food and Travel). If you cannot say what searches the board should rank for, rename it.

Writing a board description
Boards have a description field that most accounts leave blank. Write two or three sentences that state the topic, use the main phrase once, and work in two or three close variants as part of real sentences.
Example for Small Bathroom Ideas: "Small bathroom ideas for apartments and older homes: storage that fits a narrow room, tile and paint that make a tiny bathroom feel bigger, and renter friendly updates you can undo."
Example for Meal Prep Ideas: "Meal prep ideas for the week, from Sunday batch cooking to five minute lunches. Includes high protein meal prep, freezer meals and plans that reuse one grocery list."
No comma lists, no hashtags. Pinterest's community guidelines treat repetitive text as spam, and hashtags are plain text now anyway.
Board covers
Each board can have a cover image. Pinterest shows it as a square on your profile, so choose a pin whose subject sits in the middle of the image. A cover is for people, not for search; its job is to make the board look worth opening. Pick one strong image per board and leave it alone.
Cleaning up existing boards
Most accounts built over a few years have a mix of focused boards, catch-all boards and boards from topics you no longer cover. Here is how to sort them.
Rename what is close. A board called Recipes with mostly dinner pins becomes Easy Dinner Recipes. Renaming keeps every pin and every follower.
Split what is mixed. A board with dinners and desserts becomes two boards. Create the new board, move the pins that belong there (select pins, move), then rename what is left.
Archive what no longer fits. Boards from an old niche, a trip you took years ago, or a hobby you dropped: archive them. Archiving removes the board from your profile and from distribution, but keeps the pins and lets you restore the board later.
Delete almost nothing. Deleting a board removes all its pins permanently. The only boards worth deleting are empty ones and true mistakes.
Reorder. Pinterest lets you set the order boards appear on your profile. Put the boards for your main topic first so a new visitor sees what you are about.
Secret boards
A secret board is visible only to you and anyone you invite. It is not distributed, not shown on your profile and not read for search. Use secret boards to collect ideas, to plan a seasonal set of pins before publishing them, or to save competitor pins for reference without endorsing them publicly. When a secret board is ready, you can make it public, and from that moment its name and pins count.
Group boards
A group board is a board with more than one contributor. It does not give pins extra reach, and Pinterest has said the intended use is collaboration rather than promotion. If someone invites you to a group board, treat it like any other board: join only if the topic matches and the owner keeps it clean. See do Pinterest group boards still work for the full picture.
A quick board audit
Go through your profile once and answer, for each board:
- Is the name a phrase someone would search? If not, rename.
- Is it one topic? If not, split.
- Does it have a two-sentence description? If not, write one.
- Have you pinned to it in the last three months? If not, archive or plan pins.
- Is the cover a clear, centered image? If not, change it.
An hour of this does more for an older account than a month of new pins on badly named boards.

Frequently asked questions
- How long can a Pinterest board name be?
- 50 characters. Most good names use far fewer, because the name should be a phrase people search, such as Small Apartment Decor, not a sentence.
- How many boards should I have?
- As many as you have distinct topics, and no more. Ten focused boards beat forty thin ones. Each board should be able to take a fresh pin from you at least a few times a month.
- Should I delete old boards that do not fit my niche?
- Archive them instead. Archiving hides a board from your profile and stops it being distributed, but keeps the pins. Deleting removes every pin on the board permanently, including any saves other people made from them.
- Do secret boards affect my account?
- No. Secret boards are not shown to anyone, not distributed and not read for search. Use them to plan, to collect references or to stage pins before a seasonal push.
- Is it worth writing board descriptions?
- Yes. Two or three plain sentences that use the board keyword and its variants give every pin on the board extra context for search. Most accounts leave the field empty, which is one reason it helps.
