What Amazon allows
Amazon's Associates Operating Agreement defines a "Site" broadly. It includes a website, and it also includes "social media user-generated content, online software application, or Alexa skill". A Pinterest account is a Site under that definition, and you can place your Special Links on it. Two rules in the Program Policies matter most for Pinterest:
- Special Links must be "accessed directly from your Site". You cannot create tagged links for, or display them on, a site that is not yours. In practice: pin your Amazon links from your own Pinterest account, not from boards or accounts you do not run.
- Amazon may "review, monitor, crawl, and otherwise investigate your Site to verify compliance", and the information in your account must be "accurate and complete at all times". Keep your Pinterest profile listed in your Associates account so the activity Amazon sees matches what you told them.
Amazon never approves a Pinterest account by name. It approves you, the Associate, and holds you to the agreement wherever your links appear.
The disclosure Amazon requires
Section 5 of the Operating Agreement states the exact wording: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." Put it where it can be seen, and do not rewrite it.
Amazon also ties your responsibility for disclosures to "the U.S. FTC Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsement and Testimonials in Advertising", and for paid influencer content its policies give the example of "#Ad" or "#Sponsored". The FTC's own guidance says a disclosure should be "placed with the endorsement message itself", not only on a profile page, and that you should not "mix your disclosure into a group of hashtags or links".
On Pinterest that means three places:
- The pin description, first sentence, in plain words: "Affiliate link: I earn a commission if you buy through it." Pinterest's description does not show in the feed, but it shows the moment someone opens the pin, before they click through.
- Your profile bio, with the Amazon wording, so every pin inherits it.
- The page the pin links to, if you link to your own site first.
Links: no shorteners, no cloaking
Amazon's Program Policies are blunt. "You will not use a link shortening service" in a way that makes it unclear you are linking to Amazon, and "You will not cloak, hide, spoof, or otherwise obscure the URL of your Site containing Special Links". Pinterest's community guidelines say the same thing from the other side: "Pinners should be able to reasonably anticipate where your link will take them", and shortener services "that are abused for spam, may be blocked".
So paste the full tagged Amazon link into the pin, or link to your own page that holds the Amazon links. Do not run Amazon links through a shortener, a redirect plugin or a tracking domain that hides the destination.
The 24-hour window, and the 2026 change
A session starts when someone clicks your Special Link. It ends after 24 hours, or when the customer places an order for a non-digital product, whichever comes first. Anything they add to the cart in that window counts if the order is placed before the cart expires, which is usually 90 days. A customer who returns later through another of your links opens a new window.
Amazon's update page lists changes effective April 14, 2026, including a 180-day limit: products must be shipped to, streamed or downloaded by, and paid for by the customer within 180 days to qualify, and purchases referred through paid or boosted ads that link to Amazon are excluded more widely. Read the current Commission Income Statement in Associates Central before you plan around it.
The practical lesson for Pinterest: pins get clicked for months after you publish them, and every click starts a fresh window. Evergreen product pins keep earning long after the posting day.
Images: what you can and cannot use
Amazon's policies say you "will not add to, delete from, or otherwise alter any Program Content in any way", with one exception: "you may resize Program Content consisting of a graphic image". They also say you "will not store or cache Product Advertising Content consisting of an image". A pin that is a downloaded Amazon product photo with your text overlay is an altered, stored image. Do not build pins that way.
Build pins from your own photos: the product in use, in your kitchen, on your desk, on your porch. If you do not own the product, make a text-led pin and let the Amazon listing supply the photo after the click. Our templates are made for exactly that.
Two ways to connect Amazon and Pinterest
Standard Special Links. Create the link in Associates Central with your tag, paste it as the pin's destination, write the disclosure into the description. Works for any Associates account.
Amazon Storefront link. Pinterest's help center describes a direct connection for "eligible creators" with a Pinterest business account, an Amazon Influencer Program account and a Storefront. Once linked, "Affiliate links will be applied automatically to tagged Amazon products" and "Pins with affiliate links will automatically feature an affiliate link disclosure". The Storefront also shows on your profile, and an optional auto-sync posts eligible pins from Pinterest to your Storefront. You cannot choose which Storefront links if you have several; Pinterest picks the one matching your account's country.
If you qualify, the Storefront route handles the disclosure label for you. Keep the written disclosure in the description anyway: it is what the FTC guidance asks for, and it survives if the label ever changes.
What to pin
Pinterest searches are plans: a room, a gift, a trip, a recipe. Pins that help someone finish a plan earn; pins that just show a product do not.
| Pin type | Example title | Why it earns |
|---|---|---|
| Round-up | 9 Small Kitchen Organizers That Actually Fit a Drawer | One click, many products in the 24-hour window |
| Gift guide | Gifts for Dads Who Say They Want Nothing (Under $50) | Seasonal demand, buyer intent, repeat traffic every year |
| Best X for Y | Best Blender for Smoothie Bowls (Tested 3) | Matches how people search, comparison builds trust |
| Problem first | How I Stopped My Sourdough Sticking (One Cheap Tool) | Story plus product, high save rate |
| Setup or checklist | Everything in My Minimalist Desk Setup | Multiple linked products, evergreen |
Each of these works best when the pin links to a post or page on your site that holds the Amazon links, with the pin's own description carrying the disclosure. Direct-to-Amazon pins work too, but a page lets you add context, more products and a second chance for the click.
Write the pin text with the keyword first and the disclosure in the first sentence. The description generator has an affiliate preset that does both.
Measuring what works
Associates Central reports show clicks, ordered items and earnings per tracking ID. Create a separate tracking ID for Pinterest in your account so you can see Pinterest's share. Pair that with Pinterest Analytics, where outbound clicks per pin tell you which pins send the traffic. Over a month, two numbers matter: outbound clicks per pin, and ordered items per hundred clicks. Make more pins like the ones that win both.
Compliance checklist
- Pinterest profile listed in your Associates account; account details current.
- "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases" in your bio and on any landing page with Amazon links.
- Plain affiliate disclosure in the first sentence of every affiliate pin's description.
- Full tagged Amazon links or a link to your own page; no shorteners, redirects or cloaking.
- Your own photos or text-led designs; no stored or altered Amazon product images.
- Original pins, each one different, pinned in moderation; no mass repeats of the same link.
- No asking others to save your affiliate pins in exchange for anything, and no fake accounts.
- Prices and claims that match the listing today; do not state a price that may have changed.
Run every affiliate pin through the checker before it goes out, then through Pin Doctor for the search side.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I put Amazon affiliate links directly on Pinterest pins?
- Yes. Amazon's Operating Agreement defines a Site to include social media user-generated content, and Pinterest allows affiliate links as long as the content is original, the commercial nature is disclosed, and you use them in moderation. Pinterest also offers a direct Amazon Storefront connection for eligible creators that applies affiliate links to tagged products automatically.
- What disclosure does Amazon require?
- Section 5 of the Operating Agreement requires the statement As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Put it where it can be seen, and add a plain affiliate disclosure in the pin description itself so people see it before they click.
- Can I use a link shortener for Amazon links?
- No. Amazon's Program Policies say you will not use a link shortening service in a manner that makes it unclear that you are linking to an Amazon site, and that you will not cloak, hide, spoof, or otherwise obscure the URL of your site containing Special Links. Pinterest's guidelines add that people should be able to reasonably anticipate where your link will take them.
- How long does my link earn for?
- A session starts when someone clicks your link and ends after 24 hours or when they place an order for a non-digital product, whichever comes first. Items added to the cart inside that window still count if the order is placed before the cart expires. From April 14, 2026 Amazon also requires the product to be shipped and paid for within 180 days to earn commission.
- Do I need the Amazon Influencer Program to pin Amazon products?
- No. A standard Associates account and tagged Special Links work on Pinterest. The Influencer Program adds a Storefront, which Pinterest can link to a business account so tagged Amazon products get your affiliate links and an automatic disclosure.
